The Life! program is a free healthy lifestyle program that motivates you to be healthier and more active and protects you against type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Life!’s exercise physiologists take a realistic and ‘consistency is key’ approach to physical activity. Here are their tips.
1. Think “move more”
Scheduling in exercise is fantastic, but it’s also helpful to think about how you can move more in your everyday life. Instead of getting the closest car park at the shops or hitting the couch as soon as you get home, change your mindset to move more. Take the stairs, ride to the shops, walk from a car park that’s a bit further away… Physical activity can be accumulated in small amounts.
2. Be realistic
Hate running? Then don’t sign up for a half marathon – try power walking instead. Have a young family and a full time job? Then getting to the gym every day might be too much for your busy schedule. When setting exercise goals, take an honest view of what will work for you and you’re more likely to succeed.
3. Exercise with a group
There are plenty of benefits to exercising in a group or with family and friends. Aside from the physical benefits, you can socialise and feel more motivated. Accountability is a great motivator too. If you don’t show up, you’ll be letting someone else down.
4. Focus on health and strength
It’s easy to get discouraged if results don’t happen immediately, for example if you’re concentrating on weight loss. Focus on the other positives too such as how many times you walked this week. Or perhaps you feel stronger and healthier, have more energy or sleep better. Maybe you’ve ridden a bike for the first time in years or laughed a lot while trying to master some Zumba moves. There are many physical and mental benefits to being active.
