Premiers Active April
Across Victoria, local governments are embracing Premier’s Active April. Latrobe City Council is one council that has taken up the active challenge and is enjoying considerable success with an array of initiatives aimed at promoting Active April to residents.
Latrobe City Council wanted to promote enjoyable, low cost and free physical activity and in 2014 joined forces with Latrobe Leisure. As a direct result of this partnership, registrations for Active April in the Latrobe region doubled.
All Active April Latrobe City registrants automatically receive a free ten session swim, gym and spa pass to one of the Latrobe Leisure centres. The Council has been proactive tracking the use of these passes and can see exactly how many residents have taken the opportunity to get involved in some physical activity and the results have been very positive. A partnership between Council and GippSport has also assisted to promote Active April and its numerous benefits to local sporting clubs.
Latrobe Council has spread the word by placing ads in the local paper, Latrobe Valley Express, on local radio, the Council’s website and social media channels. Active April has been encouraged at schools and in the workplace. Leading the way for other local businesses and organisations are the Latrobe City Council and Healthy Together Latrobe workplace teams. These organisations are using the power of the workplace and group activity to engage and motivate staff to get active.
One of the most popular activities in the region is Traralgon parkrun. This new recurring event kicked off for the first time on Saturday 4 April. Participants meet every Saturday morning at 8am to run 5km around Traralgon Park. Traralgon parkrun is free of charge and open to all ages and running standards. It’s great to see the popularity of this event with new runners joining each week together with the regulars all aiming for a new personal best.
